Hey Folk World Water Day is 22 March.

70% of water use goes towards agriculture.

If you want to eat (and who doesn't) we need water.

Some say WWIII will be fought over water.

There are already 1000s of lawsuits in the US alone related to water.

World wide 884,000,000 (3x us pop) do not have access to clean water and 3,500,00 die annually (mostly kids) because of diseases related to unclean water.

Please find a way to mention water - the importance of water in our lives and importance of sharing water - with your students.

Operation Santa is only $128 from raising an all time record of $2000. Operation Santa helps provide Christmas for children from all Madison County schools. CPR and AED training

Are you interested in getting certified in American Heart Association CPR and AED? (BCLS)

CPR and AED Training will be offered in January, dates are pending. We are looking at holding the training on 2 days, starting at 7am on one day, ending at 4pm on the other day to give you as much opportunity as possible to attend. The cost for the training is $40.

This will be a "challenge" class for people who have been certified before and is not intended for beginners. This is the only time this school year that CPR training will be offered.

I would like to get a count of how many people would be interested in order to plan times. If you are interested, please reply to this email and let me know what time of day would best suit you.

I will contact you with exact dates and times when I have it nailed down.

Please note that the BIG BLUE BINS IN THE HALLS are for PAPER ONLY!! Someone has been dumping plastic and glass in these bins and we end up having to go dumpster diving to clean them out. If you have plastic and glass bottles please either bring them to the 3 round blue containers next to my classroom at the end of the science hall OR give them to Ms. Paxton's Snail's Pace when they come around daily (MANY THANKS TO SNAILS PACE!)

Congratulations to the high school for their exemplary teamwork. Kim Novak has spearheaded an excellent project that serves as a teaching tool. The sustainability building was installed at the high school as an interdisciplinary project. There were many contributors. Brad Sprinkle donated the building. Joe Davis and his students constructed the building. Joe Walker installed the wind turbine and the solar panel. Brian King installed the weather station, the bamboo flooring, the gutter, rain barrel and the insulation display boxes. Danielle Parker, Brian King, and Kimberly Novak installed the sedum roof perm culture. Heidi Summer's advanced art class is working on a nature-scene mural to be completed sometime this year. This program was established to help students who might choose a construction career and educate on green building options that exist. We also appreciate the donations made by Lowes and Build it Naturally.

A PROCLAMATION

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the American people demonstrated that in times of hardship, the values that define us do not simply endure -- they are stronger than ever. As a Nation, we responded to unthinkable tragedy with an outpouring of service and goodwill. On that dark day, first responders rushed into a burning Pentagon and climbed the stairs of smoking towers on the verge of collapse, while citizens risked their own health and safety to prevent further heartbreak and destruction. As Americans, we came together to help our country recover and rebuild.

Today, we pay tribute to the selfless heroes and innocent victims of September 11, 2001, and we reaffirm the spirit of patriotism, service, and unity that we felt in the days and months that followed. By volunteering our time and unique skills, we can enrich communities across our country, and together, we can strengthen our Nation to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

In the days to come, I ask all Americans to join together in serving their communities and neighborhoods in honor of the victims of the September 11 attacks. Today and throughout the year, scores of Americans answer the call to make service a way of life -- from helping the homeless to teaching underserved students to bringing relief to disaster zones. I encourage all Americans to visit Serve.gov, or Servir.gov for Spanish speakers, to learn more about service opportunities across our country.

As we join in serving causes greater than ourselves and honoring those we lost, we are reminded of the ways that the victims of 9/11 live on -- in the people they loved, the lives they touched, and the courageous acts they inspired. On Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pledge to carry on their legacy of courage and compassion, and to move forward together as one people.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day," and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, the Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized "National Day of Service and Remembrance."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2011, as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. I invite the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. PBIS Week 1

Our first week of PBIS, we had 11 referrals! For such a short week and the first week of implementation, we are very happy with these numbers and know they will go up as students become acclimated to this positive system and continue to behave more in the positive way we are encouraging.

To let you know about the prizes:

The homework pass is on a pink piece of paper and has one of the team member's signature. The signature verifies the legitimacy of the pass (to avoid any being dropped/lost and then found and used). Teachers should take the homework pass from student so it cannot be used in another class.

The game pass is on a cream/yellow paper and also will have a verifying signature by one of the PBIS team members. If you are working game duty and a student uses the pass, TAKE THE PASS so it cannot be used again.

This week, we had 3 winners from our random drawing. 2 students chose a homework pass and 1 student chose a game pass.

As some of you are already aware, through the cooperative efforts of the CTE, ROTC, and Science Departments, as well as the generous donations of Lowes, Build It Naturally, and grants from several sources, a small 'sustainability' building has been put up behind the science wing. Although the building is a work in progress there are several aspects already completed and we would love to share the progress with you. There will be a low-key (no champagne) open house on Sat. before and after graduation but if you are interested in seeing the building on Friday please let me know.

What we have already accomplished:

Building donated through a grant from Brad Sprinkle

Concrete Pad and Building Construction by Joe Davis , Brad Franklin, Herb Lamb, and their students

Sustainable Bamboo Floor (materials donated by Build It Naturally) cut and placed by Brian King and his students

Memorial Day

Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer. In 2011, Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 30.

He's spoken at several chruches in the area and is a friend of our coleader Charlie Rice. Join us at 7:15 on Wednesday May 4 to hear him speak. Below I have provided a link to upcoming CPR classes for the 2011 year at AB Tech. The certification is good for 2 years and is through the American Heart Association. If you or someone you know is in need of certification or recertification; please share. I know that this is a requirement for PE folks and should be for EC folks and the folks at the schools that respond to most of the daily injures/illnesses(such as the student services secretaries) to hold this certification. Trike A Thon to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research

On Friday, the children in child care participated in a Trike A Thon to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. On Tuesday, April 12th we will be coming around the school during 2nd period to collect donations. Over the past two years we have donated over 3,000 dollars to help the children at St. Jude Children's Hospital. Please encourage your students to donate money, every little bit helps.

April is National Poetry Month

To celebrate, MHS Media Center is holding a poetry contest. Winner of the contest will receive a $10.00 gift certificate to the book fair in May. Please submit all poems to the media center by April 15. Judges will be Heather Cline and Scott Ray.

A poem about MHS, which includes all faculty members, has been written by our very own Casey Willis. Please visit the media center to check it out. It has also been broadcasted on MHS podcast.

Winner of March's Graphic Novel Contest is "The Newspaper" by Nez Covington - she will receive a free movie ticket! We also have a few honorable mentions: "The Iliad" by Breanna Davis, Haley Duncan, and Logan Ray; and "Aeneid" by Henry Seiler, Lesli Marchese, and Paul Soutter. Honorable Mention for graphics: "Ashes to Ashes: A Heroes Tale" by Michael Beasley. The winner and honorable mentions will be displayed in the Media Center through April.

Senior Board presentations are scheduled for April 26-28.

MHS Media Center is hosting a bookfair! Dates are May 6-13. More info to come.

Mars Hill Elementary's 5K

Mars Hill Elementary will be sponsoring its third annual 5K walk/run fundraiser on April 30th to help raise awareness of childhood obesity and to promote fitness. The 5k will be a culminating event of a week long focus on and discussion of the importance of exercise, fitness and nutrition. The 5K will begin at 9:00 and the 1/2 mile fun run will begin at 10:00. The route will be the Bailey Street/Bruce Road "loop" which is 3.1 miles (5 kilometers). Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come and support our school and enjoy this community event! Solar Panels

The solar project at Madison High School will begin soon. This project, in conjunction with French Broad Electric Membership Corporation, will provide working solar panels at MHS. In addition to providing solar energy, the panels will serve as a learning tool for our science students. We look forward to this joint project.

Congratulations to our seniors and our Social Studies Department. The state has just released last year’s ranking of EOC scores. For the 3^rd year in a row we are number 1 in the state among public high schools in US History. We also move up from 2^nd place to having the number 1 EOC scores in Civics.

Joides Resolution

Monday 6 Sept 2010I am off to a good start flying across the country on my journey to join the scientific ocean drilling research vessel called Joides Resolution with the School of Rock crew waiting in Victoria Canada. We will be heading to the Cascadia Margin off the coast of British Columbia. We will be conducting geologic investigations using deep sea cores and logging data. We will also be observing the assembly and installation of an ACORK (a sub-seafloor observatory) that will take various measurements deep in the ocean floor.I will be blogging about my life at sea as I sail from 9 Sept to 19 Sept. I hope you will follow my with me and other members of the expedition on our adventure at www.joidesresolution.org . You can also become a fan of the JR on Facebook and on Twitter. http://joidesresolution.org/blog/207 I will also be doing a satellite conference with Doni Angel's middle school students at 8:15 am "ship time" 14 September. I will ask the IT folk if there is a way to upload this so you can see how it went.Below is a map showing where we will be (Site 889) to install the sub-seafloor observatory (48° 41.9964' N Latitude and 126° 52.3302' W Longitude). This is near where the Juan de Fuca and North American plates meet up. If I understand the map correctly the ocean is about 1300 m / 1.3 km (about 0.8 mile) deep here. The ACORK will be installed about 300 m below the sea floor using one really big drill!

I want to thank everyone for a great year for Operation Santa. MHS staff, students and clubs raised about $2000 in cash, gift card, toys and food. Your generosity gave 38 families a Christmas this year. To be honest, I didn't think we were going to be able to help that much but MHS came through with the largest donation in the past three years. Dr. Tommy Justus informed us that MHS helped with almost half of this year 's budget. The family names come from each school in the county. Coats and clothing were provided for each child(along with toys,of course). For your information, more high school age children were served this year.
Thank you to Dr. Tipton for wanting MHS to undertake this service project for the past three years.
Enjoy the rest of our Christmas break and Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone has power back on at your homes.

Thanks again for your help with recycling!

We will be using some of the money earned to purchase new bins for the gym and breezeway area. Look for them in January.

The Madison Waste pick up guy today said we need to be aware of the following:

1. Plastic can NOT go into the big blue lidded rolling bins only in plastic bags in the round bins near my room.

2. Some of the big blue lidded rolling bins are 'missing' so if you have one in your room if you could 'replace' it in January so he can do a recount (he couldn't tell me specific numbers so I have nothing to go on but his telling me some are missing).

3. Plastic bottles only right now - not plastic bags or non-drink bottles. Not sure why. And we MUST make sure there are not any liquids in them.

4. No garbage in bins.

Recycling Update

In fiscal year 2008-2009 (12 months) Madison High recycled 7,140 pounds of material and saved the county $81.43 in disposal fees.

July 09 through Oct 09 (3 months) we recycled 2,200 pounds of material saving the county $25.09 in disposal fees.

It costs Madison County approximate $100 a ton for trash disposal (all Madison County trash is transported by truck to TN) and approximately $25 a ton to recycle (recycled materials are sold to different companies including one in Weaverville).

I need 3 packets of work from you for each class that you teach. Each packet must be 90 minutes worth of work. It is a good idea to provide more work than you think is necessary in order to ensure that the students are busy for the full 90 minutes. Your packet must include full explainations of your expectations and directions. In other words, tell them exactly what they are suppose to do (leave no room for interpretation).

Label your packets:

The packets need to be turned in by December 1st. Give them to Miss Whitt or Miss Sams. These need to be turned in on time. If you do not turn in packets, students will not be allowed to stay.

If you have questions about the packets, talk to your department chair.

Senior Project – The Monster

You have finally made it to your senior year. You flourish in the glory of your last year in high school. As your imagination runs wild with fantasies of college life, your English teacher’s voice suddenly intrudes your musings. “Now you will decide what you will research for your senior project.”
Talk about a wake up call. The senior project is the cause of much distress among English IV students here at Madison High. However, if approached in a positive way, the senior project can be one of the most memorable moments of your life. Therefore we challenge you to approach the senior project with a determination to learn.
During the project you will learn many things about proper research, writing, time management, planning, and public speaking. If you apply yourself, you will also learn many things about yourself that you did not know before.
If you do however, find yourself getting stressed as a result of this project; please seek the guidance of an English teacher, or your mentor. If you attack the senior project with a desire to grow, you will be surprised at how much you have changed upon the completion of this project. Just remember, time and effort pays off. Good luck!

Attendance Policy

Students are allowed FIVE unexcused absences and be able to receive credit for that class. Students over that limit will not receive credit unless they are enrolled in remediation.

Students must be present for 75 minutes in order to be counted present for that class period. Three tardies equals one absence. Excessive tardies will be handled with the school’s disciplinary policy.

Students can miss any number of days, which meet the Public School of North Carolina “School Attendance Policy on Lawful Absences”. The following is what will be excused with proper documentation:

1. Illness or injury

a. Students MUST have documentation from a medical professional or organization being submitted within 5 school days of the students return.

2. Quarantine

a. Students MUST have proper documentation from the Local or State Board of Health.

3. Death in the Immediate Family

4. Medical or Dental Appointments

5. Court or Administrative Proceedings

6. Religious Observance

7. Educational Opportunity

· All documentation are due 5 school days after the students return

· See student handbook for more information of excused absences

Any student with more than 5 unlawful absences, but no more than 8 unlawful absences will be allowed to attend after school attendance remediation on a “time for time” basis. One and one-half contact hours will be equal to one period of attendance. For more remediation information see the student handbook.

Stream Clean-Up

100% Chance of rain this morning.
Went to the Laurel River (Shelton Laurel Creek) with the gloomy feel of either nobody showing up or it coming a dangerous storm. Got there a hour early to ride the river and get a attack strategy in place. Around 10am one of my students showed up. By 10:15 am we had 2 students and 4 Trout Unlimited Members. Enough to do something Started raining and nobody wanted to stop We picked up 8 bags full, 2 tires, a load of siding, and a sack of dippers. (Used of course )
